Jeremy Bentham
Popularly known for advocating utilitarianism and the concept of animal rights, Jeremy was also a social and legal reformer, philosopher and a jurist. He strictly opposed the idea of natural rights and heavily came down upon it stating that such rights are nothing but “nonsense upon stilts”. Known for originating the concept of panopticon and influencing welfarism, Bentham mainly used his position in favour of individual and economic freedom, equal rights for women, freedom of expression, end of slavery and separation of church and state. It is noted that most of his writing were never published even during his lifetime. Some of his works published during his lifetime include Fragment on Government, Short Review of the Declaration, Panopticon, and Defence of Usury etc.
